Recommendation for use of Geosynthetics in Railway Track Formation
The use of geosynthetic products for the reinforcement of base structures, in support of roads (paved or unpaved) and railway tracks is well known. Innumerous academic researches, laboratory tests and field trials have been performed over the last 20 years or so. Indeed, following the experience, we can add also actual deployment to this list of supportive evidence. The geosynthetic products most often used for this purpose are Geotextile, Geogrid, and Geocell (a 3-dimensional version of Geogrid):
Benefits for the Railway Network
Based on these results, we can show that the soil reinforcement methods lead to important benefits for the railway network:
• Higher speed of trains, for both passenger and freight trains
• Increased capacity and higher loads, in particular for freight trains
• Cost reduction for deployment of new and/or upgraded tracks (due to reduction in layer thickness and less filling material)
• Cost reduction for maintenance of tracks
• Improved safety and lower level of track faults
