Passengers may soon pride upon modern 'Make in India' railway coaches. Completing successful trial run of Indian Railways' premier model rake of luxury railway coaches on Friday, Indian Railways may soon roll out these coaches in trains.
Trial run of 24 coaches was administered between Bhopal and Bina Railway stations pacing at 120 km per hour. These passenger coaches have been designed by Bhopal's Coach Rehabilitation Workshop (CRWS), Nishatpura.
What differentiates these new coaches from previous makes are jerk-less seats and appealing interiors. Also, straying from the generic green or red seats, the new colour purple gives a high-class look and feel instantly.
Besides, the coaches are roomy and have bigger side berths, and furnished with LED reading lights, snacks table and bio-toilets system. Every cubicle has separate mobile and laptop charging points.
Indian Railways launched the ambitious pilot project in 2011 to remodel interiors of coaches of all reserved classes in an attempt to create a 'homely' atmosphere during rail journeys. Railways assigned the designing of model coaches to West Central Railway (WCR) zone for executing these massive changes in trains.
111 coaches are to be manufactured by CRWS of which 87 would be non AC, 17 would be for AC 3 tier, 5 for AC 2 tier and one each for AC 1 and chair car. While AC coaches have been built at the cost of Rs 70 lakh, sleeper coaches cost Rs 49 lakh.
After conclusion of trial run, report would be send to Railway Board and post clearance, the new model rake of coaches will first be introduced in ISO certified trains and Rajdhani Expresses.
CRWS will then institute phase two of luxury coaches. It also has plans of manufacturing executive class chair car coaches for Shatabdi Express after testing of the model rake resulted in fruition.
